Overview
Punakha served as Bhutan's capital until the 1950s, and the dzong here — built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers — is the standard against which the country's other fortresses are measured. The valley's lower altitude makes it noticeably warmer than Paro or Thimphu, a welcome change of pace on a multi-stop itinerary.
