Bill to repeal Article 370 introduced in Parliament

J&K to be bifurcated into J&K and Ladakh as separate UTs

The government has introduced a Bill to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution which gives special status to Jammu & Kashmir. The Bill was introduced by Home Minister, Amit Shah today amidst protests by Opposition members. Besides Article 370, the government has proposed to bifurcate Jammu & Kashmir into Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as separate Union Terriotories. 


For the first time in the history of Indian Parliament, these Bills were introduced with prior approval of the President of India. Using special powers vested on the President of India, the President has notified the Constitution Order 2019 repealing the Article 370 which bestows special status to the State of Jammu & Kashmir.


The government has also introduced Bill  to scrap Section 35(a) of the constitution which prohibits outsiders from buying or owning land or other assets in the State
